Transforming an Unused Swimming Pool into a Flower Workshop in Winchester

We were approached by our Clients who had inherited an indoor swimming pool which was rarely used.  They were exploring how to make more use of the space and create a long-term solution.  They wished to drain the pool and keep the structure and the equipment should anyone in the future like to re-commission it. They were planning to use the space as a workshop for their cut-flower business.

The swimming pool is constructed from concrete with a liner and measures around 60m2, the whole room around 86m2 and an approximate depth of 2.3m at the deep end and 1.3m in the shallow end.  There are steps at the shallow end and a ledge at the deep end. Access to the room was good with double doors leading out onto the garden area.  Access is an important consideration on pool cover projects, we use HGV lorries, trolleys and large span beams which may require same floor access.

After an initial consultation with our designer, we arranged a survey visit at the property.  It was decided that it would be more aesthetic to cover the whole floor in the same finish and to use a marine ply such as Okoume ply.  This type of ply is perfect for conditions that may have extreme moisture conditions such as our Client’s flower workshop.

The finished product is a Pool-span installed with a void underneath for storage if required. The whole floor has been covered and if the swimming pool needs to be recommissioned at any point this is a straight-forward process.

The perimeter edges of the new floor have been scribed into the walls and features, flooring caulk has been used to seal any gaps ready to receive a floor covering to match the interior of the room.  The pool-span beams and surrounding floor were then covered in lightweight marine plywood panels finished in an antique pine stain to create a waterproof workspace.

The result was well received by our Clients who gave the following feedback:

“Thanks very much again for a great job done with the floor covering over our swimming pool. This has transformed the space and we will be able to put this to very good use.”

“The pool room or ‘Flower Workshop’ as it is now known has been a great success and very useful space.  Thank you for your quick and efficient service.  The team that came and fitted the floor, were very professional and did a great job.  We would highly recommend.”
