How Do You Cover an Unused Pool?

Pools are a valuable addition to any property, but they’re not always in use. When not in use, an uncovered pool can present various challenges such as safety hazards, maintenance issues, and wasted space.

Covered pool

Covering your unused pool is an effective way to address these concerns. Pool-dek provides a practical solution, converting your pool into a usable surface without draining the water.

Why Cover an Unused Pool?

Leaving a pool uncovered when it’s not in use can lead to several issues. Safety is a primary concern, especially in homes with children or pets, where an uncovered pool can be a potential hazard. Additionally, an uncovered pool requires regular maintenance to keep it clean and functional, even when it’s not being used. By covering the pool, you can reduce these maintenance tasks and associated costs. Moreover, covering your pool allows you to reclaim valuable space that can be used for other purposes.

The Pool-dek System Explained

The Pool-dek system offers a straightforward way to cover your pool, transforming it into a solid, usable surface. The system comprises a metal framework that supports engineered timber panels, creating a durable floor over the pool. This solution doesn’t require you to drain the pool, which simplifies the process and reduces downtime.

One of the strengths of the Pool-dek system is its adaptability. The panels can be customised to match your existing flooring or outdoor area, ensuring a cohesive look. This makes the system suitable for various settings, from residential gardens to commercial spaces.

Installation Process

Installing the Pool-dek system is a relatively quick and hassle-free process, typically taking between two to four hours depending on the pool’s size and shape. The installation involves a few key steps:

  • Assessment: The first step involves assessing the pool and surrounding area to determine the best approach for installation.
  • Framework Installation: A metal framework is installed over the pool. This framework forms the base for the covering panels.
  • Panel Installation: Engineered timber panels are placed over the framework. These panels are designed to fit together seamlessly, creating a stable surface.
  • Finishing Touches: Any final adjustments are made to ensure the cover fits perfectly. The surface can be finished to match your desired look, whether you prefer a specific material or colour.

Versatility and Adaptability

The Pool-dek system is versatile and adaptable, making it suitable for a range of applications. For homeowners, the system can be used to create additional space for events, play areas, or simply as an extension of your living area. In commercial settings, it offers a way to convert pool areas into functional spaces for events like weddings or corporate gatherings.

Customisation options are a key feature of the Pool-dek system. You can select from various finishes and materials to match your existing décor, whether indoors or outdoors. This ensures that the covered pool area integrates seamlessly with your property’s overall design.

Long-Term Benefits

Choosing the Pool-dek system to cover your unused pool offers several long-term benefits. The primary benefit is enhanced safety, particularly in homes with young children or pets. By covering the pool, you eliminate the risk of accidental falls, making your property safer.

Another significant benefit is the reduction in maintenance costs. With the pool covered, there’s no need for regular cleaning or chemical treatments, which can save time and money over time. Additionally, the ability to repurpose the pool area as a functional space adds value to your property, whether you’re planning to use the space yourself or sell the property in the future.

Covering an unused pool is a practical solution that can enhance the safety, functionality, and appearance of your property. The Pool-dek system provides an efficient and adaptable way to achieve this, converting your pool into a durable, usable surface without the need to drain the water. The system’s ease of installation, customisation options, and long-term benefits make it a suitable choice for both residential and commercial properties.

We first approached Pool-dek (supplied by Stage Systems) for a unique opportunity at the summit of Victoria Peak on Hong Kong Island, one of the world’s most exclusive residential developments.

The ambition was to achieve a flexible landscape, to entertain large groups of family and friends, as well as enjoying the more intimate environment of the swimming pool. We developed a design which incorporated a hard floor pool cover to match the adjacent natural paving, and to celebrate the unique waterfront views towards Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour.

The Pool-dek team remained in communication throughout the project and provided great design, technical support, delivery and installation.
